‘I Gave 500 cedis, Not Dollars’ – Mahama Jests Amid Sammy Gyamfi Dollars Gift

Former President John Dramani Mahama brought both smiles and subtle political clarity during a stop on his ongoing “Thank You Tour” in Dodowa, Greater Accra Region, on Friday, May 16, 2025, where he acknowledged a traditional dance troupe with a gift—and quickly distanced his gesture from a recent controversy involving dollar notes and a public official.

Mahama’s visit to Dodowa was part of a series of engagements to show appreciation to supporters, and it featured a stirring performance by a local cultural troupe. The drums thundered, the melodies invoked the spirit of Kroboland, and the ensemble paid tribute to Mahama with poetic metaphors likening him to a rising king.

Touched by the performance, Mahama responded by handing an envelope to the lead dancer, containing what he later clarified to be a GH₵500 cash gift.

But it was the president’s humorous yet deliberate comment during his speech that drew warm laughter from the crowd.

“Let me begin by commending the cultural troupe for the very beautiful performance they gave—and to put on record that the money I gave was 500 cedis and not dollars,” Mahama said, grinning widely to a chorus of chuckles from attendees.

Mahama’s comment came on the heels of a public backlash over a viral video showing GoldBod CEO Samuel Gyamfi splashing U.S. dollars on self-styled evangelist Patricia Asiedua (Agradaa) from his luxury Range Rover.

The video, filmed on May 10, prompted widespread criticism, formal petitions to CHRAJ, and questions over the source of Mr Gyamfi’s wealth, including reports that his personal bank accounts held over GHS 100 million.

The presidency later confirmed that Chief of Staff Julius Debrah had summoned Gyamfi and that he had been cautioned. However, the government has indicated that no further action is expected on the matter.

By clarifying the nature of his own benevolence with a dose of humour, Mahama not only disarmed any potential criticism but also sent a clear message about transparency and modesty in public conduct—a subtle contrast to the recent scandal.

The former president’s light-hearted moment also reflects his continued ability to read the public mood and connect through wit, even while reinforcing ethical boundaries.
