Head Porter Jailed Two Years for Damaging Obetsebi Lamptey Interchange

The Dansoman Circuit Court has sentenced a 48-year-old head porter, Yaw Asare, to two years in prison for unlawfully damaging parts of the newly constructed Obetsebi Lamptey Interchange in Accra.

Asare was convicted of causing unlawful damage under Section 172 of the Criminal Offences Act (Act 29) and will serve his sentence at the Nsawam Medium Security Prison.

The incident occurred on June 9, 2025, when Asare was arrested for destroying parapet beams and accessories on the interchange, which had only been completed a few months earlier.

Following the ruling, the Ministry of Roads and Highways issued a statement on Friday, August 22, expressing concern about what it described as a growing trend of vandalism against public road infrastructure.

“The Ministry has observed with deep concern the rapid rate at which some members of the public cause unlawful damage to road infrastructure, including vandalism and vehicular crashes, especially those involving traffic lights,” the statement said.

The Ministry reminded the public that such acts are criminal and punishable by law, stressing that it is working with the Ghana Police Service to clamp down on offenders.

“The Ministry will continue to work closely with the Ghana Police Service to ensure that anyone found unlawfully damaging public road infrastructure is held accountable and faces the full force of the law,” it added.

The Obetsebi Lamptey Interchange, one of Accra’s major road projects, was commissioned to ease traffic congestion and enhance road safety at one of the capital’s busiest intersections. Its recent completion has now come under threat from acts of vandalism, raising concerns about the protection of Ghana’s public infrastructure investments.
