“He Was My Loyal Friend and Strongest Supporter”- Bawumia Mourns Akwatia MP Ernest Kumi

Former Vice President and 2024 NPP Presidential Candidate, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has expressed profound grief over the sudden death of Ernest Yaw Kumi, Member of Parliament for Akwatia, who passed away unexpectedly on Monday, July 7, 2025.

Dr Bawumia, visibly emotional, paid a solemn visit to the late MP’s family home on Tuesday, July 8, to console the bereaved family and reflect on the life and legacy of his close ally.

“We got the news while we were at the NEC meeting yesterday. Since then, we have not been able to recover from the shock,” he said. “Ernest was not just a colleague — he was my personal friend and strongest supporter in parliament.”

Dr Bawumia recalled with sadness that just days prior to Kumi’s passing, they had spent time together in Accra, engaging in what he described as a heartfelt and ordinary conversation with no sign of ill health.

“Just this past Friday, I was with him at my house, and we had a good chat. Nothing suggested he was unwell. I still can’t believe he’s gone,” Bawumia said.

Ernest Kumi, known for his firm loyalty to the NPP and unwavering support for Dr Bawumia’s presidential ambition, had been a rising star in the party’s ranks and a key figure within the Majority Caucus.

In his message to the family, Bawumia pledged his continued support during this difficult time, urging them not to exclude him from any decisions regarding the funeral arrangements.

“We have come home to mourn with you. This pain is not yours alone; it’s all of ours. Whatever you decide concerning the funeral and burial, please count me in,” he added.
