A fatal gun attack in Binduri, a district in Ghana’s Upper East Region, has claimed the life of a man in a brutal assault believed to be linked to the ongoing Bawku chieftaincy conflict.
The attack occurred near Atuba, a suburb of Binduri Central, where security sources confirmed that the assailants not only gunned down the victim but also set his body and motorcycle ablaze. Authorities have acknowledged receiving reports of the incident but say they are still investigating and cannot provide further details at this time.
Though the precise motive behind the attack remains unverified, initial assessments by local security officials suggest it may be connected to the long-standing and recently intensified Bawku chieftaincy dispute, which has gripped the area with renewed violence in recent weeks.

This latest killing comes just hours after a high-level visit to the region by the Acting Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Dr Christian Tetteh Yohuno. During a meeting with the Bawku Naba, Asigri Abugrago Azoka II, the IGP reaffirmed the police administration’s commitment to maintaining neutrality and professionalism in managing the fragile security situation.
“I urge you to continue working closely with security agencies so that we can collectively restore peace and stability in Bawku and surrounding communities,” the IGP said, addressing the Bawku Naba and other stakeholders. His remarks followed a petition from the Kusaug Youth Association, which alleged misconduct and bias by some police officers stationed in the conflict zone.
In response to the latest violence, the Bawku chapter of the Mamprugu Youth Association (MAYA) issued a strong condemnation of the attack. The group called on the government to bolster the security presence in Binduri and impose stricter restrictions on motorbike usage, which they claim is often exploited by armed attackers to carry out hit-and-run missions.
MAYA also appealed to the Member of Parliament for Binduri, Hon. Mahmoud Issifu, to take immediate steps to safeguard his constituents, stressing the urgent need for practical and sustainable interventions to curb the growing wave of insecurity in the area.
“This continuous loss of life must not be allowed to persist. The people of Binduri deserve safety and protection, and we demand swift action from both local and national authorities,” the group’s statement read.
As tensions continue to rise, residents of Binduri and its surrounding communities are being urged to remain calm and support ongoing investigations by providing timely and accurate information to the police.
The Ghana Police Service has yet to release an official statement on the Binduri attack but is expected to provide updates as investigations progress.
