The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has strongly denied allegations that its members are deliberately overcharging passengers amid reported shortages of public transport vehicles.
The denial follows comments by the Minister of State for Government Communication, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, who accused some transport operators of creating artificial scarcity in order to hike fares, leaving commuters stranded at various points.
Reacting to the claims, the National Secretary General of GPRTU, Kofi Amoah, said the union has not authorised any of its members to charge unapproved fares or abandon stations to exploit passengers.

“These problems happening at the roadside, where passengers are stranded and drivers take advantage to charge unapproved fares, involve vehicles that do not belong to the union,” Amoah said in an interview with Channel One TV on Wednesday, January 14. “Most of these are floating vehicles.”
He explained that GPRTU members operate strictly from recognised stations and are bound by approved fare structures and routes, unlike unaffiliated drivers who pick passengers along the roadside.
Mr Amoah disclosed that the union has already held internal meetings to address the situation and is preparing to intensify monitoring on the ground.
“We will be hitting the streets with our task force to ensure that if our vehicles are found engaging in such practices, we will cause their arrest and impose sanctions,” he warned.
He also appealed to commuters to avoid boarding vehicles from unauthorised roadside points and instead use official GPRTU stations, where operations are regulated.
“Our members pay fees and are required to operate within approved routes and fares. We encourage passengers to use these stations rather than catching vehicles from the roadside,” he advised.
The GPRTU’s response comes amid growing public frustration over transport challenges, with many commuters complaining of delays, congestion and rising transport costs. The union maintains that it remains committed to discipline, fairness and protecting passengers from exploitation.
