Gov’t Denies Allegations of Journalist Attacks, Calls for Dialogue

Felix Kwakye Ofosu, spokesperson for President John Dramani Mahama and Minister of State for Government Communications, has rejected claims that the government is behind recent assaults on journalists.

His response follows strong criticism from the President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Kwabena Dwumfour, who on Tuesday, February 18, accused the Mahama administration of failing to curb rising attacks on journalists.

Dwumfour cited seven reported cases of journalist assaults since Mahama took office, describing the situation as “unprecedented” and lamenting the government’s inaction.

However, addressing the media in Accra on Wednesday, February 19, Kwakye Ofosu dismissed the allegations as “most regrettable” and unfair to President Mahama, the government, and the journalists affected.

“It was claimed that seven journalists had been attacked, and statements were made that sought to create the impression that there is some design by Mahama and his government to attack journalists. It is a most regrettable narrative,” he stated.

He revealed that he had engaged with the GJA president to discuss the concerns and explore alternative ways to address them. As a result, both parties agreed to a direct meeting next week to further deliberate on the issue.

Kwakye Ofosu emphasised that President Mahama has always maintained a cordial relationship with journalists and would never condone violence against the press.

“All of you are aware that President Mahama is an easy-going, down-to-earth, affable individual who relates well with all manner of people. He is a member of the GJA in good standing. Essentially, he is one of you, and therefore he will be the last person to supervise a dispensation where journalists are attacked,” he stressed.

He further refuted claims that the government was targeting journalists in retaliation for their work, calling such accusations “completely incorrect.”

As the controversy unfolds, the scheduled dialogue between the government and the GJA will be crucial in addressing concerns and ensuring press freedom remains protected in Ghana.
