GNFS Introduces New Fire Safety Measures for Markets

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has announced new directives aimed at improving fire safety in the country’s major markets following recent fire outbreaks that have caused significant losses.

In a statement issued on January 14, 2025, the GNFS outlined measures to provide round-the-clock fire coverage and enhance market safety. Personnel and fire appliances will now be stationed at markets nationwide from 6:00 pm to 6:00 am daily to ensure rapid response to potential fire incidents.

A dedicated task force has also been established to patrol the markets daily, maintaining vigilance and ensuring swift action in the event of a fire outbreak.

Additionally, the GNFS plans to set up fire units or posts in key markets across the country. These units will focus on intensifying fire safety education, conducting regular inspections, and enforcing compliance with fire safety protocols.

“The Chief Fire Officer, Julius A. Kuunuor, has instructed that personnel and fire appliances be deployed at various markets across the country from 1800 hours to 0600 hours daily to provide round-the-clock fire cover,” the statement emphasised.

To strengthen these efforts, the GNFS will collaborate with market authorities, the Ghana Police Service, and National Security to ensure effective surveillance, protection, and quick response to fire-related incidents.

The GNFS called on traders, market authorities, and the general public to support the initiative. It urged stakeholders to adhere to fire safety regulations and actively participate in creating a safer environment in markets nationwide.

These measures aim to curb the recurring market fires, safeguard lives and property, and promote a culture of safety among market users.
