GNASSM Defends Secretary, Demands Retraction from TEAP

The Ghana National Association of Small Scale Miners (GNASSM) has come out strongly in defence of its General Secretary, Mr Godwin Nickleson Amarh, following allegations of irresponsible mining practices made by a group known as The Extraction Accountability Project (TEAP).

In a press statement signed by GNASSM National President, Philip Akufo, the Association described the claims as false, malicious, and lacking any credible evidence. The group insists that Mr Amarh’s mining concession remains one of the most exemplary within the small-scale mining sector in Ghana.

“Mr Godwin N. Amarh’s concession has long been recognised as a model for responsible mining, both in environmental sustainability and social responsibility,” the statement said. “His work has become a point of reference and a case study for many miners seeking to operate ethically and professionally.”

GNASSM further emphasised that Mr Amarh was nominated to serve on the GOLDBOD Board precisely because of his integrity, expertise, and longstanding commitment to responsible mining practices.

The Association strongly suspects that the allegations by TEAP form part of a deliberate smear campaign to discredit both Mr Amarh and the work of GNASSM.

“We challenge TEAP to provide any concrete, verifiable proof to support their claims. Until then, we consider these attacks as defamatory and aimed at undermining the Association’s efforts to sanitise the small-scale mining sector,” Akufo stated.

In addition to defending its embattled General Secretary, GNASSM reiterated its commitment to ethical mining operations and environmental stewardship.

It urged the public and stakeholders to ignore TEAP’s accusations and instead focus on the positive strides being made within the sector.

GNASSM also called on relevant regulatory and law enforcement bodies to thoroughly investigate the claims. At the same time, the Association issued a seven-day ultimatum to TEAP to retract its allegations and issue a formal public apology.

“GNASSM will not relent in its efforts to uphold responsible mining practices, and we will not stand idly by while the reputations of our hard-working members are dragged through the mud,” the statement concluded.
