GJA Renews Pressure on IGP Over Ahmed Suale Murder Case

The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has once again called on the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to take urgent action in the long-delayed investigation into the murder of journalist Ahmed Suale, as concerns over press freedom continue to grow in Ghana.

Speaking at the 2025 World Press Freedom Day and Honours Night, GJA President Albert Kwabena Dwumfour underscored the deteriorating safety of journalists in the country, disclosing that 11 journalists were assaulted in February alone.

“The records are not good for us, especially on economic, security and legislative indicators,” Dwumfour noted. “This is the reason why we have been calling on the police to take attacks on journalists seriously, especially bringing perpetrators of attacks on the media to justice to serve as a deterrent to others and to end impunity.”

He stressed that the GJA has not relented in seeking justice for journalists, particularly Ahmed Suale, an investigative reporter with Tiger Eye PI who was gunned down in 2019 under mysterious circumstances.

“We haven’t been sleeping on the attacks against our members,” he said. “We want to reiterate our call on the IGP that the time to act is now.”

Meanwhile, Minority Leader and Member of Parliament for Effutu, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, addressed the growing role of artificial intelligence (AI) in media and its implications for press freedom. He called for the creation of a national framework to regulate AI use in journalism to prevent misuse and the spread of misinformation.

“We must ask ourselves, how do we protect press freedom in an era where artificial intelligence is reshaping the media landscape?” Afenyo-Markin asked. “I firmly believe that the answer lies in balance — a deliberate and inclusive approach to innovation that upholds the principles of transparency, accountability and human dignity.”

He advocated for the development of both national and regional AI frameworks to safeguard press freedom while allowing room for innovation.
