GJA Hails Arrest of Ahmed Suale Murder Suspect, Demands Full Justice

The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has commended the Ghana Police Service for the arrest of Daniel Owusu Koranteng, a key suspect in the 2019 murder of investigative journalist Ahmed Suale.

Koranteng was arraigned before the Madina District Court on Wednesday, March 19, 2025, and remanded into police custody. His next court appearance is scheduled for April 1, 2025.

In a statement, the GJA praised the efforts of Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno and CID Director-General DCOP Lydia Yaako Donkor in advancing the case.

The association noted that the arrest is the most significant breakthrough in the six-year search for justice for Suale.

However, while welcoming the development, the GJA called on law enforcement not to relent in their pursuit of all those involved in the murder.

“We hope this major breakthrough will only be the beginning of the long search for justice for Ahmed Suale and relief for media freedom advocates in Ghana and abroad,” the statement read.

The unresolved murder of Ahmed Suale has been a stain on Ghana’s press freedom rankings. The GJA reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring justice is served, warning that it will take the case to the ECOWAS Community Court of Justice if substantial progress is not made by the end of March 2025.

The association also demanded updates on other unresolved cases of attacks on journalists, including the brutal assault of Joy News reporter Latif Iddrisu.

Meanwhile, the GJA has engaged international partners, including the Federation of African Journalists (FAJ) and the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ), who have pledged to push for accountability on global platforms.

The GJA emphasised that this arrest must mark the first step in ensuring justice for Suale and all journalists targeted for their work in Ghana.
