Ghana’s steady rise in global press freedom rankings has been hailed as a national achievement, with Minister Samuel Nartey George linking the progress to both media resilience and government commitment to openness.

Speaking at the World Press Freedom Day celebration, he revealed that Ghana has climbed to 39th position on the World Press Freedom Index, up from 52nd last year and 62nd in 2023.

The Minister described the milestone as evidence of a thriving media landscape built on decades of professionalism, institutional growth, and democratic tolerance.

He further highlighted the growing role of digital infrastructure in sustaining press freedom, noting that the internet has become “today’s printing press.”

“Our investments in broadband and digital literacy are not just economic decisions they are democratic ones,” he said.

According to him, access to reliable information through digital platforms empowers citizens, strengthens governance, and enhances public participation in national development.

Sam George reaffirmed government’s commitment to expanding digital access while protecting online freedoms, stressing that a connected and informed society is essential for a healthy democracy.

He urged stakeholders to safeguard Ghana’s reputation as a beacon of press freedom in Africa and ensure that the gains made are not only protected but deepened.
