The Western Regional Minister, Joseph Nelson, has officially confirmed the death of Flying Officer Twum Ampadu, one of the eight victims of the tragic military helicopter crash that occurred on Wednesday, August 6, to his bereaved wife, Lieutenant Ewuradwoa Kumi-Kyeremeh, at the 2nd Garrison Western Naval Command in Sekondi.
Flying Officer Ampadu, who served at the Takoradi Air Force Base, was part of the ill-fated mission to Obuasi when the aircraft went down in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region. His wife, Lt Kumi-Kyeremeh, serves as a psychologist within the naval command.

The minister, visibly moved, paid a solemn condolence visit to the young officer’s wife, who was overwhelmed with grief upon receiving the devastating news of her husband’s untimely passing.
“We’ve come to offer comfort to the wife of Flying Officer Twum Ampadu, one of our crew members, during this incredibly difficult time,” Minister Nelson said. “It’s unimaginable how they’re feeling. Even for us, it’s hard to put into words the pain of seeing our sister in this state.”
He disclosed that all three crew members on board the downed aircraft were personnel from the Takoradi Air Force Base, deepening the loss for the region.
Flag Officer Commanding of the Western Naval Command, Commodore Samuel Agalezano, who welcomed the regional minister and his delegation, described the atmosphere as one of profound sorrow.
“Today has been a sombre Wednesday for Ghana, and this garrison is no exception,” he said. “Our sister is understandably distraught, and we’re doing our best to offer comfort. The loss is deeply personal for this command.”
Commodore Agalezano thanked the regional authorities and military leadership for their presence and support, noting the symbolic importance of their visit in a moment of national tragedy.
Flying Officer Ampadu was among eight distinguished Ghanaians who lost their lives in the crash, including:
- Dr Edward Kofi Omane Boamah, Minister for Defence
- Dr Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, Minister for Environment and MP for Tamale Central
- Alhaji Limuna Muniru Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator
- Dr Samuel Sarpong, National Vice Chairman of the ruling NDC
- Mr Samuel Aboagye, civilian staff
- Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, pilot
- Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah, flight technician
Their remains were flown to Burma Camp in Accra, where a full military ceremony was held to receive the flag-draped caskets, followed by onwards transport to the 37 Military Hospital mortuary.
President John Dramani Mahama has declared three days of national mourning, with flags flying at half-mast across the country. The President has also suspended all his official engagements for the rest of the week in honour of the fallen.
As Ghana continues to reel from this immense loss, tributes have poured in from across the country. Military bases, party offices, and community centres have turned into centres of prayer and reflection.
Flying Officer Twum Ampadu leaves behind a grieving wife and a nation in mourning, but his service and sacrifice, like those of his comrades, will not be forgotten.
