Speaker of Parliament, Rt Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has joined the nation in mourning the tragic loss of eight lives in the devastating military helicopter crash that occurred on Wednesday, August 6, describing the news as a personal and national tragedy that has left him in “ruthless pain”.
In an emotional Facebook post, the Speaker expressed profound grief over the deaths of Defence Minister Dr Edward Omane Boamah, Environment Minister Dr Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, NDC Vice Chairman Samuel Sarpong, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator Alhaji Muniru Mohammed, and military officers Samuel Aboagye, Ernest Addo Mensah, Manaen Twum Ampadu, and Peter Bafemi Anala.
“The news of the helicopter crash… has left me with unfathomable pain. I am in ruthless pain, and our nation is in shock and distraught,” Speaker Bagbin wrote.

He described the victims as “fallen heroes” who embodied dedication to public service and had more to contribute to the growth of the nation.
“It is unfortunate that we lost them to the cold hands of death at this time… Their legacies will continue to inspire generations to come,” he added.
In the wake of the tragedy, President John Dramani Mahama has suspended all official activities and public engagements for the rest of the week. The Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, announced the suspension in a statement on Wednesday evening.
“There will be three days of national mourning starting tomorrow, Thursday, 7 August 2025. The government, through the Chief of Staff, has meanwhile directed that all flags must fly at half-mast until further notice,” Ofosu stated.
At a late-night emergency press briefing, Chief of Staff Julius Debrah officially confirmed the identities of the deceased and reiterated the state’s support for the affected families.
“The President and the government extend our condolences and sympathies to the families of our comrades and the servicemen who died in service to the country,” he said.
The eight individuals were aboard a Ghana Armed Forces Z-9 helicopter on a government assignment to Obuasi in the Ashanti Region when the aircraft lost radar contact shortly after takeoff. It was later discovered crashed in a forested area in the Adansi Akrofuom District.
Military and national security teams led the recovery operation, retrieving all eight bodies, which have since been transported to Burma Camp in Accra and subsequently taken to the 37 Military Hospital for preservation.
