GAF Begins Major Barracks Redevelopment to Boost Military Welfare

The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has commenced three major redevelopment projects aimed at addressing accommodation challenges and improving welfare conditions for military personnel.

The projects, which cover the redevelopment of Burma Camp–Medo Lines, El-Wak Barracks and the Ghana Armed Forces Post Office into a modern multi-use facility, are expected to provide improved residential and support infrastructure for personnel.

The housing component of the initiative will include two-bedroom and studio apartments as part of efforts to reduce the accommodation deficit within the Armed Forces.

Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony, the Deputy Minister for Defence, Hon. Ernest Brogya Genfi, described the projects as a strategic investment in national security rather than just construction works.

He said improved living conditions for military personnel would contribute significantly to boosting morale, enhancing retention and strengthening operational readiness as the Armed Forces continue to undertake expanding national and international security responsibilities.

According to him, the redevelopment projects form part of President John Dramani Mahama’s Resetting Ghana Agenda and complement government’s ongoing 10,000 housing programme for military personnel across various garrisons.

Hon. Brogya Genfi stressed that providing quality accommodation for soldiers and officers remains critical to building a stronger and more effective Armed Forces capable of protecting the country.

The General Officer Commanding (GOC) Support Services Brigade, Major General Glover Ashong Annan, said the Burma Camp redevelopment would replace ageing colonial-era structures with modern, sustainable residential facilities.

He described the initiative as a clear demonstration of government’s commitment to improving the welfare of personnel and creating an environment that supports effective military service.

Major General Annan expressed appreciation to the Military High Command, development partners and other stakeholders for supporting efforts to modernise military infrastructure.

The ceremony was attended by the Chief of the Defence Staff, Lieutenant General William Agyapong, Service Chiefs, senior military officers, retired officers, defence civilian staff and other invited guests.

The GAF said the redevelopment forms part of broader efforts to modernise military infrastructure and improve conditions for personnel serving Ghana’s national security interests.
