Former Minister Ignatius Baffour Awuah and Two Others Arrested Over Football Violence

Former Minister of Employment and Labour Relations, Ignatius Baffour Awuah, along with Agyemang Duah Owusu and Kyeremeh Joseph, has been arrested in connection with a violent clash that occurred during a football match, leading to one fatality.

The incident took place on February 2, 2025, during a Ghana Premier League fixture between Nsoatreman FC and Kumasi Asante Kotoko FC at Nsoatre in the Bono Region.

A police statement released on February 3 confirmed that all three suspects are assisting with investigations.

“A search conducted in the room of suspect Agyemang Duah Owusu led to the retrieval of two dresses with suspected bloodstains and an MP 23 pistol with 15 rounds of ammunition,” the police revealed.

The Inspector-General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, has assured the public of a comprehensive investigation and extended condolences to the family of the deceased and the leadership of Kumasi Asante Kotoko FC.

To ensure a thorough probe, a special team from the Criminal Investigation Department Headquarters has been deployed to support the Bono Regional Police Command.

The match, which ended in a 1-0 loss for Kotoko, witnessed intense clashes both on and off the pitch.

Tensions escalated when players clashed, resulting in four red cards. The situation worsened after the final whistle, leading to violent confrontations between rival supporters.

Authorities are intensifying efforts to bring those responsible to justice and prevent future occurrences of such violence in Ghanaian football.
