Focus on Fixing the Economy, Not Complaints—Abena Osei-Asare to Mahama

The Member of Parliament for Atiwa East and former Minister of State at the Ministry of Finance, Abena Osei-Asare, has called on President John Dramani Mahama to shift his focus from lamenting about the economy to delivering on his campaign promises.

Her comments follow Mahama’s State of the Nation Address, in which he described Ghana’s economy as being in crisis, leading to severe hardships for citizens. He pledged to tackle the challenges head-on and reset the country on a path to growth and prosperity.

However, Osei-Asare dismissed Mahama’s claims, insisting that the previous administration did not leave the economy in an “intensive care unit (ICU),” as the president suggested.

Speaking in an interview with Hot FM, she urged Mahama to stop “buying time with complaints” and instead start implementing the policies outlined in his party’s manifesto.

“If the economy is truly in ICU, as he claims, then he should focus on fixing it instead of ranting. A responsible leader takes action, not just talks about problems,” she stated.

She further argued that Mahama’s ambitious social intervention programs—such as Nkok) Nkitikiti, the $10 billion infrastructure push, and the Women’s Bank—are all expenditure-driven. If the economy were as bad as Mahama claims, she questioned, where would he find the funds to implement these policies?

“The fact that he is rolling out these big-ticket policies proves that the economy is in good shape. Mahama is misleading Ghanaians for political sympathy,” Osei-Asare asserted.

Her remarks add to the ongoing political debate over the true state of Ghana’s economy, as the government faces pressure to stabilise inflation, boost job creation, and drive sustainable growth.
