Every secondary school in this country will be required to own a farm – Eric Opoku

Eric Opoku, the Minister-Designate for Food and Agriculture, has announced an ambitious plan to strengthen Ghana’s agricultural sector by encouraging institutional farming.

Speaking before the Appointments Committee of Parliament on Monday, January 20, Opoku proposed that all senior high schools in Ghana be required to establish and manage their own farms.

“We are also going to encourage institutional farming. Every secondary school in this country will be required to own a farm,” he stated.

Opoku emphasised the importance of collaboration with the Ministry of Education to ensure the success of the initiative. He revealed plans to recruit labourers who would assist schools in setting up and maintaining their farms.

“We will also recruit labourers for secondary schools to help them establish and maintain their farms,” he added.

The initiative, according to Opoku, aims to address food shortages in schools while simultaneously reducing the cost of the school feeding program.

He noted that the move would enhance both the quality and quantity of meals served to students, contributing to their overall well-being.

“If nothing else, we can reduce the cost of school feeding and also enhance both the quality and quantity of the food provided to our students,” he assured the committee.

The proposed institutional farming program is expected to leverage Ghana’s abundant land resources while fostering a culture of agricultural engagement among the youth. It aligns with broader efforts to promote food security, reduce reliance on imports, and create employment opportunities in the agricultural sector.
