Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum Declares Bid for NPP Flagbearer Ahead of 2028 Elections

Former Minister of Education, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, has officially declared his intention to contest for the flagbearership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) ahead of the 2028 general elections, setting the tone for what is expected to be a hotly contested internal race.

In a Facebook post on Thursday, April 1, Dr Adutwum made a passionate pitch to party members and Ghanaians, positioning himself as the visionary candidate capable of delivering transformative leadership.

“In the silence of the noise, one man’s record speaks louder than mere campaign chants. One man’s impact echoes across every region. One man’s vision is what Ghana needs for a total Ghanaian transformation. #TheAdutwumFactor,” he wrote.

Dr Adutwum, widely respected for his technocratic leadership and education sector reforms, is viewed by many as a fresh force within the NPP—a blend of policy intellect and grassroots appeal. His tenure as education minister was marked by a push for STEM education, TVET expansion, and curriculum reforms, earning him praise from local and international observers.

While the NPP has not yet opened nominations for the 2028 presidential primaries, Adutwum’s early declaration signals an ambitious and well-timed move, potentially giving him a strategic edge in mobilising support.

Political analysts say his announcement will add momentum to discussions around generational leadership renewal within the party, especially as the NPP looks ahead to rebuilding after the 2024 elections.

Dr Adutwum’s entry into the race is expected to attract attention from both party stalwarts and young voters seeking a results-orientated leader.
