Former Auditor-General Daniel Yaw Domelevo has called on the Chief of Staff to set a clear deadline for members of the newly sworn-in government to declare their assets and liabilities.
Mr. Domelevo’s remarks follow President John Dramani Mahama’s swearing-in of the first batch of state ministers, during which the president urged them to prioritise asset declaration as part of their commitment to public service.
Speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show on Thursday, January 23, Mr. Domelevo suggested a one-week timeframe for appointees to complete the process after assuming office.
“I propose that the Chief of Staff announce that, a week after your swearing-in, you must declare your assets and liabilities. You should be able to find two or three hours to do this. I wish the Chief of Staff would set a deadline, not in terms of a specific day, but a period, saying that you have one week from the day you are sworn in to declare your assets,” Mr. Domelevo stated.
He explained that setting a deadline is necessary because officeholders typically become preoccupied with their duties shortly after assuming office, making it more difficult to focus on asset declaration. “After one week, by the second week, they become seriously busy,” he noted.
In addition to setting a deadline, the former auditor-general underscored the importance of making asset declarations public, ensuring transparency, and allowing citizens to monitor what officials own before taking up their roles.
Mr. Domelevo praised the President for encouraging his appointees to comply with the law and stressed that failure to declare assets must not be tolerated but punished accordingly.
This call highlights the ongoing efforts to strengthen accountability and transparency in Ghana’s public sector governance.
