Deputy IGP Files Defamation Suit Against Captain Smart and Media General

The Deputy Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr. Christian Tettey Yohunu, has initiated legal action against broadcaster Blessed Godsbrain Smart, popularly known as Captain Smart, and Media General Limited.

The defamation suit was filed at the Accra High Court on Thursday, January 2, 2025.

According to the court documents, the deputy IGP alleges that Captain Smart made defamatory statements during a radio and television program aired on December 27, 2024.

During the broadcast, Captain Smart purportedly claimed that certain elements within the Ghana Armed Forces and officials of the Ghana Police Service were conspiring to destabilise Ghana’s constitutional order through a coup d’état.

Additionally, the Deputy IGP contends that Captain Smart alleged his appointment as Deputy IGP was politically motivated.

The broadcaster further claimed that Mr. Yohunu had participated in meetings to secure the position and had visited the homes of National Democratic Congress (NDC) officials while being an alleged member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP). These visits purportedly involved monetary exchanges to lobby for his appointment as Inspector General of Police.

Mr. Yohunu asserts that these statements are baseless and have caused damage to his reputation.

Consequently, he is seeking general damages for defamation and an injunction to restrain Captain Smart and Media General Limited from making further defamatory statements.

The Deputy IGP is also requesting a court order directing the defendants to issue a retraction of the statements and render unqualified apologies. The apologies are to be published three times on both Onua TV and Onua FM to ensure wide dissemination.
