Former Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Godfred Yeboah Dame, has called on his successor, Dr. Dominic Ayine, to present evidence of an internal memo that allegedly recommended the withdrawal of charges against former Bank of Ghana Deputy Governor, Dr. Johnson Asiama.
Dame insists that no such document exists and argues that Ayine’s decision to discontinue the case was based on misinformation.
The controversy stems from Ayine’s recent defence of his decision to drop the prosecution against Dr. Asiama, citing a review that reportedly exposed significant flaws in the case.

On Wednesday, February 12, Dr. Ayine publicly stated that his reassessment of ongoing financial cases revealed an internal memo from the Prosecution Division of the Attorney General’s Office. According to him, the document, prepared during Dame’s tenure, advised the former AG to discontinue the charges against Dr. Asiama due to weak evidence.
“My review of some of the cases revealed fatal flaws in the prosecution’s case,” Dr. Ayine said. “In the course of this review, I was shown an internal memo prepared by the Prosecution Division, which recommended that the charges against Mr. Johnson Asiama be dropped. This is very significant.”
However, speaking at a press conference on Friday, February 14, Dame dismissed Ayine’s claims, firmly stating that no such recommendation was ever made during his tenure.
“Let me state for the record that, to the best of my knowledge, no such memorandum exists. I do not recall receiving any such memo from the Prosecutions Division,” Dame declared.
He then threw down the gauntlet, challenging Dr. Ayine to publicly produce the memo to support his claims.
“I challenge Dr. Ayine to produce this supposed memo for public scrutiny, as he has presented it as the justification for his actions,” Dame added.
The disagreement between the two legal heavyweights has intensified the debate over recent case withdrawals under Ayine’s leadership. It adds to Dame’s broader concerns that the current attorney general is deliberately clearing high-profile individuals linked to the previous NDC administration.
With mounting pressure for transparency, all eyes are now on Dr. Ayine to prove the existence of the controversial memo or risk further scrutiny over his legal decisions.
