Former Chief Justice Sophia Akuffo has firmly defended her appointment to the Council of State, stating that her qualifications and experience justify her place in the advisory body.
Sophia Akuffo, who now serves as one of the 31 members of the Council, made these remarks after being sworn in by President John Dramani Mahama at the Jubilee House on Tuesday, February 18, 2025. The Council is chaired by former Speaker of Parliament Edward Doe Adjaho.
Responding to questions about her role in the Council, Akuffo dismissed any doubts about her legitimacy.

“I am a former Chief Justice. Am I not? Do I or do I not qualify?” She asked journalists.
She emphasised that her presence on the Council was based on merit and not political alignment.
“I am there in my own right simply as a former Chief Justice. I am not even there representing the Judicial Service,” she clarified.
Akuffo also took the opportunity to stress the importance of the Council of State’s advisory role, assuring that she would not be a mere rubber stamp for the government.
“The Council of State is a body that is supposed to be advising the president. I am not going to be singing his master’s voice, so to speak. An adviser does not parrot,” she asserted.
She pledged to provide independent and honest counsel, ensuring that her contributions serve both the presidency and the nation’s best interests.
“An adviser speaks with honesty. An adviser looks to the best interest not only of the person they are advising but also of the function the person is serving,” she said.
Her comments come amid ongoing discussions about the relevance and composition of the Council of State, with some critics questioning its impact on governance.
However, Sophia Akuffo’s firm stance signals her determination to contribute meaningfully to national decision-making.
