CLOGSAG Suspends Nationwide Strike, Urges Workers to Resume Duty on April 2

The Civil and Local Government Staff Association, Ghana (CLOGSAG), has suspended its nationwide strike following a decision by its National Executive Council (NEC) at an emergency meeting held on March 28, 2025.

In a statement signed by Executive Secretary Isaac Bampoe Addo, CLOGSAG announced the temporary suspension to pave the way for continued engagements aimed at resolving the impasse.

“In this regard, CLOGSAG entreats staff of the Civil Service and the Local Government Service to resume work on Wednesday, 2nd April 2025,” the statement read.

The strike, which began on February 20, 2025, was triggered by CLOGSAG’s protest against the appointment of Samuel Adom Botchway as the Registrar of Births and Deaths.

The association argued that the role should be filled by a career civil servant, expressing concerns over Botchway’s alleged political affiliation with the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC).

According to CLOGSAG, appointing a politically aligned individual would compromise the neutrality of the civil service and undermine professionalism in the public sector.

CLOGSAG’s stance has received mixed reactions, with critics arguing that the association’s opposition to Botchway’s appointment is politically motivated. However, CLOGSAG insists that its concerns are purely professional, aimed at safeguarding the integrity and neutrality of the civil service.

The association has maintained that the appointment of civil servants to critical roles is essential to preserving the non-partisan nature of public administration.

The suspension of the strike is expected to ease tensions and create room for constructive dialogue between CLOGSAG and the government.

As workers prepare to return to their posts on April 2, all eyes remain on ongoing negotiations to determine whether a lasting resolution will be reached.

The government’s response to CLOGSAG’s concerns and the steps taken to address them will be crucial in preventing future disruptions within the civil and local government services.
