Burial of Muslim Victims in Helicopter Crash Suspended Due to Condition of Bodies—Suhuyini

Deputy Minister for Roads and Highways and Member of Parliament for Tamale North, Alhassan Suhuyini, has disclosed that plans for the immediate burial of the Muslim victims of Wednesday’s military helicopter crash have been suspended, citing the condition of the remains.

Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show on Thursday, August 7, 2025, Suhuyini explained that initial arrangements were in place to honor Islamic burial traditions, which require the deceased to be buried within 24 hours. However, once the bodies were recovered and assessed, it became apparent that immediate burial would not be possible.

“The information earlier was that, because of Islamic tradition, the Muslims among them were to be buried today,” Suhuyini said. “I am sure those decisions were taken before the actual state of the remains was determined.”

He added that after proper assessment, it was clear that swift burial was impractical. Families and religious leaders were informed, and plans were halted to allow for examinations and proper handling of the deceased.

“It was clear to all that it was going to be practically impossible to carry out any burial today. So, those who had to be communicated to were quickly informed last night, and arrangements were suspended until further notice,” he noted.

The devastating crash, which occurred in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region, claimed the lives of eight individuals, including

  • Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Minister for Defence
  • Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, Minister for Environment
  • Alhaji Limuna Muniru Mohammed, Deputy National Security Coordinator
  • Dr. Samuel Sarpong, NDC National Vice Chairman
  • Mr. Samuel Aboagye, Presidential Staffer
  • Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Pilot
  • Flight Officer Manaen Twum Ampadu, Co-pilot
  • Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah, Technician

The government has since announced a three-day national mourning period, with all flags flying at half-mast, and has formed a funeral planning committee to oversee memorial and burial proceedings.

Suhuyini described the loss as “irreplaceable,” noting the caliber and dedication of the deceased public servants and military personnel.

“A gap has been created, and these comrades that have fallen, I dare say, are irreplaceable. I cannot just imagine what everybody who knew them personally would be going through.”
