Botswana’s President, Duma Boko, has declared a public holiday to mark the nation’s historic triumph in the Men’s 4×400 Metre Relay at the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, Japan.
In a stunning upset, Botswana’s quartet—Letsile Tebogo, Lee Eppie Bhekempilo, Bayapo Ndori and Collen Kebinatshipi—defeated defending champions the United States, who had dominated the event for the past ten editions. South Africa took bronze.
The victory marks Africa’s first-ever gold medal in the 4×400m relay, cementing Botswana’s status as an emerging powerhouse in world athletics.

Speaking at the United Nations General Assembly in New York, President Boko hailed the athletes as “Botswana’s natural diamonds”, adding:
“I’ll be sure to tell everyone, Botswana’s natural diamonds are not just in the ground; they are our world champion athletes.”
This is not the first time Botswana has officially celebrated its track stars. In 2024, the government declared a half-day holiday following Tebogo’s 200m gold medal win at the Paris Olympics. That same Games also saw Botswana claim silver in the Men’s 4×400m relay, showing steady progress that culminated in this year’s golden breakthrough.
The 2025 win represents more than just a national triumph. It is a continental milestone, with Botswana becoming the first African country to claim gold in the 4×400m at the World Championships.
