A devastating fire has ripped through multiple residential apartments in Bomso, a densely populated suburb in the Oforikrom Municipality of Kumasi, Ashanti Region, leaving destruction and despair in its wake.
The inferno, which erupted on Monday, is believed to have originated from a suspected explosion involving an electricity meter in a single-room apartment. Within minutes, flames rapidly engulfed surrounding rooms in the same compound, fuelled by the closely packed nature of the structure and combustible materials.

Eyewitnesses described chaotic scenes as residents scrambled to salvage belongings, with some narrowly escaping the blaze. By the time the fire was brought under control, more than 50 rooms had been reduced to rubble, leaving scores of people homeless and valuables worth thousands of cedis destroyed.
“This fire spread like a storm. It started in one room, and within minutes, the entire block was on fire,” said one resident, visibly shaken.
The District Fire Commander for Oforikrom, DO2 Appiah Anthony, who led the firefighting operation, confirmed that personnel responded swiftly upon receiving the emergency call.
However, he explained that the intensity of the fire and the structural layout of the compound posed significant challenges.
“The fire had already gained a lot of momentum before our arrival,” he noted. “The design of the building — many rooms closely connected with shared roofs — made it harder to contain.”
Municipal Chief Executive for Oforikrom, Anwal Sadat Ahmed, visited the scene shortly after the incident to assess the damage and offer moral support to the affected families.
He expressed sympathy and assured the victims of the Assembly’s commitment to supporting recovery efforts.
“We are working with NADMO and other relevant agencies to assist the victims. This tragedy highlights the urgent need for proper fire safety education and timely reporting of electrical faults,” the MCE said.
The Ghana National Fire Service and other emergency agencies have since launched a full investigation to determine the exact cause of the fire and assess the extent of damage.
In the meantime, displaced residents are calling for immediate humanitarian support, including food, shelter, and clothing, as many lost everything in the blaze.
