A bloody clash between rival small-scale mining factions at the Akrokerri Police Station has left two people injured, highlighting escalating tensions over mining leadership in the area.
The violence erupted following a leadership dispute between two mining groups over control of operations. What started as a disagreement quickly turned chaotic, with both factions engaging in a physical altercation even within police premises.
Speaking to Adom News, Nana Osei Yaw, a mining site owner, accused Christian Twumasi, known as Akwala, of corruption, extortion, and mismanagement of small-scale mining activities.

He claimed Akwala’s leadership had bred conflict and that the change in government meant his authority was no longer valid.
“Akwala has been abusing his position, exploiting miners, and creating unrest. We no longer acknowledge his leadership, and we demand a change,” Nana Yaw declared.
According to him, his group sought police intervention to settle the dispute, but Akwala allegedly mobilised his men to launch an attack right at the police station.
In contrast, Akwala dismissed these claims, asserting that his faction was targeted while working at their designated site.
He alleged that Nana Yaw’s group, led by an individual called Kapaala, stormed their location and instigated the violence.
“They came to our site unprovoked, threatening our driver at gunpoint and attempting to seize our equipment. When our team resisted, the situation escalated and spilt over to the police station,” Akwala recounted.
The confrontation resulted in two individuals sustaining injuries before law enforcement stepped in to disperse the warring groups.
Police have since launched an investigation, urging all parties to exercise restraint while the matter is being addressed.
This latest clash underscores the ongoing instability in Ghana’s small-scale mining sector, where leadership disputes and regulatory conflicts often lead to violence.
Authorities are under pressure to impose stricter oversight and resolve conflicts before they spiral further out of control.
