Be Vigilant Day and Night – IGP Charges Police

Inspector General of Police (IGP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno has directed police personnel in the Ashanti Region to remain on high alert following two separate fatal shootings in Asawase, including the assassination of a prominent traditional leader.

During a fact-finding mission on Saturday, July 26, the IGP addressed officers in Kumasi, warning that criminals may vary their tactics and strike at any time, urging constant vigilance across the ranks.

“You have to be vigilant at all times,” he emphasised. “When they realise that one method did not work, they can use a tricycle or a vehicle to commit the same crime. If an offence can occur in the day, it can occur in the night.”

His warning follows a broad daylight killing at Sabon Zongo on Friday, July 25, where an unidentified man was gunned down by two assailants on a motorbike. The brazen execution happened just days after the July 22 assassination of Alhaji Abdul-Malik Azenbe, the Kusasi Chief of the Ashanti Region and head of the Kadi Divisional Area in Binduri. He was shot dead near his residence at the Asawase F-line community centre, reportedly by gunmen wielding an AK-47.

The back-to-back killings have sent shockwaves through Asawase and Kumasi, heightening fears of an emerging pattern of targeted attacks. While investigators have not officially linked the two incidents, the similar methods and geographical proximity have triggered widespread concern among residents and security analysts alike.

In response, the Ghana Police Service, supported by military units, has stepped up patrols, intensified intelligence gathering, and stationed personnel in key flashpoints across Asawase.

Meanwhile, the Ashanti Regional Security Council (REGSEC) has imposed a ban on the use of motorbikes after 7:00 p.m. in parts of the region, including the Asokore Mampong Municipality and the Kumasi Metropolis, citing the role of motorbikes in the recent shootings.

Investigations into both killings are ongoing, with police combing through CCTV footage, forensic evidence, and eyewitness accounts in pursuit of leads.

The IGP’s visit is part of broader efforts to reassure the public and galvanise security forces to clamp down on rising insecurity in the region.
