Bawumia Slams EOCO Over Wontumi Arrest, Demands Respect for Constitutional Rights

Former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has issued a strong call to the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) to uphold the constitutional rights of New Patriotic Party (NPP) Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, widely known as Chairman Wontumi, following his arrest and continued detention.

Wontumi was picked up by EOCO on Tuesday, May 27, shortly after honouring an invitation by the Police Criminal Investigations Department (CID) in Accra in relation to allegations of illegal mining.

However, his current whereabouts remain unknown—raising alarm among party members and the wider public.

In a statement released on Wednesday, Dr Bawumia expressed “deep concern” over what he described as vague charges and a lack of transparency regarding Wontumi’s detention.

“I am deeply concerned about the arrest and continued detention of Mr Bernard Antwi-Boasiako (Wontumi), particularly as the charges remain vague and his whereabouts remain unknown,” the former Vice President stated.

He emphasised that while Ghana is governed by the rule of law and no one is above legal accountability, every citizen—regardless of their political standing—is entitled to due process and legal protection as enshrined in the 1992 Constitution.

Dr Bawumia confirmed that he has been in touch with Wontumi’s legal team and commended their efforts to secure the party executive’s rights. “I appreciate the diligence and professionalism being shown by his legal representatives,” he said.

He then issued a clear reminder to EOCO and all law enforcement bodies: “I urge EOCO and other state institutions to act strictly within the bounds of the law and to respect the rights of Mr Wontumi as guaranteed by our Constitution.”

Dr Bawumia warned that any perceived abuse or overreach by state institutions risks undermining public confidence in the justice system. “Ghana must always remain a nation governed by law—not by arbitrary power. Our Republic is strongest when our institutions are both firm and fair,” he concluded.
