Bawumia Appeals to NPP Delegates: Consistency Will Secure Victory in 2028

Former Vice President and 2024 presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has urged party delegates to retain him as the party’s flagbearer for the 2028 general elections.

Speaking to delegates at Adansi Asokwa in the Ashanti Region on Wednesday, September 10, Dr Bawumia argued that Ghana’s political history shows a consistent pattern: parties that maintain their presidential candidates over multiple election cycles eventually reap electoral success.

Dr Bawumia, who lost to President John Dramani Mahama in the 2024 polls, told delegates that electoral data proves the value of political consistency.

“In 1996, our party presented President John Agyekum Kufuor, who secured 39% of the vote. We maintained him in 2000, and he won. The late President John Evans Atta Mills also contested in 2000 and 2004 before finally winning in 2008,” he said.

He went further to highlight:

  • Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo: “He lost in 2008, lost again in 2012, but won in 2016 after persistence.”
  • John Dramani Mahama: “He was presented in 2016 and 2020 and lost both times. But the NDC stood by him, and in 2024, he won.”

“This shows clearly that maintaining faith with a candidate over more than an election cycle pays, irrespective of the party,” Dr Bawumia told delegates.

He also underscored what he described as a unique feature of Ghana’s elections since the Fourth Republic began in 1992: every president has handed over power to someone they had previously contested against.

  • “President Rawlings handed over to President Kufuor, whom he had faced in 1996.
  • President Kufuor handed over to Prof. Mills, whom he contested in 2000 and 2004.
  • President Mahama handed over to President Akufo-Addo, whom he contested in 2012.
  • President Akufo-Addo later handed over to President Mahama, his former rival.”

He suggested that the trend points toward a possible handover to him in 2029, provided the NPP sticks with him as flagbearer.

Dr Bawumia described himself as the “most marketed, most prepared, and most winnable” candidate for the NPP in the next election.

“No Ghanaian can say they haven’t heard of Dr Mahamudu Bawumia. My character, my temperament, and my unifying spirit are well known. I am the most recognisable and winnable among all aspirants,” he asserted.

He urged delegates to avoid risks by selecting a new face, insisting that the party has already invested heavily in his political branding and campaign machinery.

Dr Bawumia cautioned that the party’s chances in 2028 would depend heavily on unity.

“The NPP can win in 2028, but only if we contest with a united front. Division is our biggest enemy, not the NDC,” he said.

The meeting at Adansi Asokwa marked the start of Dr Bawumia’s three-day engagement tour of constituency executives in the Ashanti Region.

According to his campaign team, the engagements are meant to:

  1. Officially inform executives of his intention to tour their constituencies.
  2. Prepare grounds for direct engagements with polling station delegates.
  3. Consolidate support ahead of the party’s flagbearer contest scheduled for January 31, 2026.
