Ayine Using Legal Technicalities to Whitewash NDC Officials- Godfred Dame

Former Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Godfred Yeboah Dame, has strongly criticised his successor, Dr. Dominic Ayine, accusing him of deliberately discontinuing high-profile criminal cases involving officials of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Speaking at a press conference in Accra on Friday, February 14, Dame alleged that Dr. Ayine was systematically clearing NDC members of wrongdoing by withdrawing multiple cases within days of assuming office.

“Dr. Ayine was sworn in as Attorney General on January 22, 2025. Just two days later, on January 24, he filed a notice to abandon the appeal in Republic versus Ato Forson and Others. Then, on January 28, he withdrew the case against Dr. Stephen Opuni and two others, effectively securing their acquittal and discharge through the backdoor,” Dame revealed.

He further detailed additional withdrawals, including the Republic versus Ofosu-Ampofo & Another on January 29 and two separate cases against Dr. Johnson Pandit Asiama on January 30, all resulting in acquittals and discharges.

Dame expressed deep concern over what he termed a “calculated effort” to erase pending criminal cases against key NDC figures. He accused the current administration of using legal technicalities to absolve its officials instead of allowing the courts to determine their guilt or innocence.

“There were more withdrawals and nolle prosequi to be entered by the NDC government through the Attorney General in the subsequent days. The only thing that disrupted the pattern of ‘one day, one withdrawal’ was the arrival of the weekend,” Dame stated.

He urged Ghanaians to take note of these developments, arguing that justice should not be sacrificed for political expediency.

“These actions unmistakably point to a broader scheme by the NDC to wipe out all criminal cases involving its officials and exonerate them—not through judicial processes, but through political manoeuvring at the Attorney General’s Office,” Dame asserted.

Dame called for greater transparency in the handling of corruption-related cases and insisted that the fight against corruption should not be undermined by partisan considerations.
