The Member of Parliament for Bawku Central, Mahama Ayariga, has strongly condemned the recent violent clashes between security personnel and youth in Bawku, which have resulted in casualties and an attack on his private residence.
In a statement issued while on official duty abroad, the lawmaker expressed deep concern over the fatal confrontations and sympathised with victims and their families. He confirmed that his private home in Bawku was vandalised and nearly set ablaze during the unrest.
“Whilst attending an official assignment out of the country, I have learnt about fatal violent encounters between the police and the youth in Bawku and a subsequent vandalisation and attempt to burn my private residence in Bawku in anger,” he stated.

Ayariga acknowledged the growing frustration among residents over the prolonged Bawku conflict and alleged misconduct by some law enforcement officers.
He called for calm and urged the youth to support ongoing efforts to bring peace to the area.
“I understand the anger and frustration of the youth about the pace of the resolution of the situation in Bawku and Kusaug and the misconduct of some misguided law enforcement officers. The National Democratic Congress (NDC) government remains committed to its promise to ensure justice and lasting peace,” he said.
The MP expressed confidence in the peace process currently being led by the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II. He noted that the process has the full participation and endorsement of key traditional rulers in the region, including the Overlord of Kusaug, Zugran Naaba Asigri Abugrago Azoka II, and the Overlord of Mamprugu, Nayiri Naa Bohagu Mahami Sheriga.
“In this regard, I will urge all of us to remain committed to the peace process being led by His Majesty the Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II,” he said.
Reaffirming his position on the chieftaincy dispute, Ayariga maintained that his views have been consistent over the years, insisting that the rule of law and judicial decisions must guide the final resolution.
“I want to assure the people of Bawku and Kusaug, whom I represent, that I remain resolute and committed to a lasting resolution of the matter according to the well-established laws and judicial decisions of Ghana, which must ultimately be respected and enforced.”
He also dismissed what he described as a politically motivated smear campaign targeting him on social media and urged the public to ignore the misinformation.
“Kindly disregard the lies being told about me by political detractors and people seeking shamelessly to take advantage of the current unfortunate situation in Bawku and Kusaug to settle personal electoral political scores. The smear campaign on social media will not distract me. In the end, we will be vindicated.”
Ayariga called for caution in the conduct of security personnel and reiterated his belief that the Asantehene’s mediation efforts offer the best path toward sustainable peace in Bawku.
