Sammy Awuku has urged government to shift its focus from political communication and public relations to concrete action in addressing Ghana’s worsening flooding situation, insisting on the floor of Parliament that “this is not the time for settings, PR and political games, but a time for real leadership and solutions.”

Speaking during heated parliamentary deliberations on the recent floods that have devastated parts of Accra and displaced thousands, the Akuapim North MP said the scale of destruction demands urgent and coordinated intervention rather than political messaging and blame trading.

He referenced the June 2014 flooding disaster, which he said resulted in the loss of over 150 lives in a single night, arguing that Ghana’s flood challenge is not new and must be treated with seriousness across successive administrations.

According to him, while various governments have initiated drainage and flood control projects over the years, the recurring nature of the crisis shows that implementation gaps remain a major concern.

Awuku stressed that behind official figures are ordinary citizens who continue to suffer devastating losses whenever flooding occurs, including the destruction of homes, businesses, and small personal investments.

He criticised what he described as excessive politicisation of disaster response, warning that such approaches distract from real solutions and deepen public frustration.

“Press conferences won’t distil our gutters. Press conferences won’t solve our flood-ready system,” he stated, insisting that communication alone cannot resolve structural infrastructure challenges.

The MP further questioned aspects of the current coordination framework for flood response, arguing that overlapping roles and unclear mandates weaken effectiveness in times of crisis.

He maintained that leadership must be decisive and focused on delivery, not optics. “This is not a time for sectors, PR, bloggers, and political positioning,” he said, adding that government must prioritise practical interventions on the ground.

Awuku concluded by urging leaders to put aside political calculations and focus on solving citizens’ problems, stressing that Ghanaians expect action, not rhetoric, especially during emergencies that threaten lives and livelihoods.
