The Eastern Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr. Mark-Oliver Kevor, has shared a deeply personal account of his final moments in contact with the late Defence Minister, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, just hours before the minister perished in Wednesday’s tragic military helicopter crash in the Ashanti Region.
Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen, Dr. Kevor—who also serves as Acting Director-General of the National Information Technology Agency (NITA)—said the news of Dr. Boamah’s death had left him “utterly devastated.”
According to him, both men were scheduled to attend the launch of the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources’ Responsible Cooperative Mining and Skills Development Programme in Obuasi. Dr. Kevor had flown to Kumasi on Tuesday and made his way to Obuasi early Wednesday morning, expecting the Defence Minister to arrive shortly after.

“I spoke to him in the morning, and he told me he was on his way. We were waiting for him at the program. At one point, I tried calling him, but it wasn’t going through—only for us to hear about the helicopter crash,” Dr. Kevor recounted.
He added that after hearing the news, they rushed to the crash site, but the area was difficult to access due to its remote location.
Dr. Kevor has since dispatched a delegation to console Dr. Boamah’s mother in Koforidua and said he plans to visit her personally in the coming days.
Dr. Boamah was among eight people killed when a Ghana Armed Forces Z-9 helicopter crashed in a forested area near Adansi Akrofuom on August 6, 2025. The victims also included the Minister for Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation, Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed; senior government officials; and three military crew members.
According to the Ghana Armed Forces, the helicopter took off from Accra at 9:12 a.m. but went off radar before crashing. Preliminary reports suggest the aircraft may have struck a tree, with bad weather suspected as a contributing factor.
The wreckage was burnt beyond recognition, with no signs of survivors.
National flags are flying at half-mast as the country mourns the loss of the high-profile leaders and heroes aboard the ill-fated flight.
