Attorney-General Confirms Extradition Request for Ken Ofori-Atta Transmitted to U.S. Authorities
The Minister for Justice and Attorney-General, Dr Dominic Ayine, has confirmed that Ghana has formally transmitted a request to the United States for the extradition of former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta and an alleged accomplice, Ernest Darko Akore, to face prosecution in Ghana.
Dr Ayine made the disclosure on Thursday, December 18, 2025, while addressing the public at the government’s Accountability Series, providing clarity on the status of the high-profile extradition process linked to investigations into alleged financial loss to the state.
According to the Attorney-General, the extradition proceedings were initiated by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) on November 19, 2025, when it formally submitted a request for the commencement of extradition processes against the two individuals, who are believed to be currently in the United States.

He explained that the request relates to investigations surrounding the Strategic Mobilisation Limited (SML) case, in which the former finance minister is alleged to have played a role in actions that caused financial loss to the state.
Dr Ayine revealed that upon receipt of the request, the International Cooperation Unit of the Attorney-General’s Department conducted a detailed review of the documents submitted by the OSP. That review, he said, identified gaps that needed to be addressed to ensure the request met the strict legal and procedural standards required under international extradition frameworks.
“As a result, we communicated our observations to the Office of the Special Prosecutor in a letter dated November 25 and requested additional documentation to ensure completeness,” the Attorney-General stated.
He noted that the OSP subsequently responded on December 9, 2025, submitting supplementary materials and addressing all the issues raised, thereby completing the extradition request package to the satisfaction of his office.
Following the completion of the documentation, Dr Ayine said the Attorney-General’s Department transmitted the request on December 10, 2025, to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which is responsible for forwarding it through diplomatic channels to the relevant authorities in the United States, particularly the U.S. Department of Justice.
The Attorney-General emphasised that Ghana has now fulfilled its part of the process, and the matter is currently in the hands of American authorities.
“At this point, it is left to the authorities of the United States, especially the judicial authorities, to determine whether there is sufficient basis for the two accused persons to be extradited to Ghana to stand trial,” Dr Ayine explained.
The confirmation comes amid intense public interest in efforts to secure the return of Mr Ofori-Atta, who has been charged in absentia by the OSP. It also follows growing calls for accountability in high-profile corruption cases involving senior public officials.
Dr Ayine’s remarks underscore the government’s stated commitment to due process and international cooperation in pursuing accountability, while acknowledging that the final decision now rests with the U.S. judicial system under its established extradition laws and procedures.
