Members of Parliament from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Ashanti Region have issued a stern warning to the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and the regional security leadership, vowing to hold them accountable if further disruptions occur during the re-election for the Council of State in the region.
At a press conference in Kumasi on Sunday, February 16, 2025, the MPs demanded a change of venue from the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council to a neutral location to prevent a recurrence of last week’s violent incident.
During the initial election, individuals believed to be affiliated with the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) task force stormed the voting centre, vandalising ballot materials just before the Electoral Commission (EC) was set to declare results. Although the police have launched an investigation, no arrests have been made so far.

The Member of Parliament for Old Tafo, Vincent Ekow Assafuah, speaking on behalf of the Ashanti Region NPP caucus, declared their determination to resist any attempts to manipulate the electoral process.
“We will hold the current security leadership, specifically the IGP and the chairman of the regional security council, strictly accountable for any further disruptions if they do not change the venue,” Assafuah warned.
The MPs also accused certain government officials of attempting to alter the voter register for the election by influencing the selection of representatives.
“We have gathered intelligence that certain assemblies are facing attempts to manipulate their electoral roll,” Assafuah revealed. “Reports indicate that coordinating directors have been instructed to swear in assembly members to render them eligible to vote. This is unacceptable and will not go unchallenged.”
The initial Ashanti Region election ended in chaos, with no clear winner declared. As a result, the Electoral Commission has scheduled a re-election on Monday, February 17, to resolve the impasse.
The North East Region is also set for a re-election after the two candidates in that contest secured an equal number of votes.
With tensions running high, all eyes are on the Electoral Commission and security agencies to ensure a smooth and credible electoral process.
