Arrest Afenyo-Markin, NAPO, Dubik Mahama Over Missing ECG Containers – Gbande

Mustapha Gbande, Deputy Director in charge of Operations at the Presidency, has called for the immediate arrest of three former top officials linked to the disappearance of over 1,300 containers belonging to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) at Tema Port.

Speaking on Eyewitness News on Citi FM on Monday, March 31, Gbande demanded the arrest of Alexander Afenyo-Markin, former Board Chairman of ECG; Matthew Opoku Prempeh, former Energy Minister; and Samuel Dubik Mahama, former CEO of ECG. The containers, which were reportedly filled with critical electrical equipment and materials intended to support ECG’s national power distribution, mysteriously vanished under questionable circumstances.

According to reports, the containers were shipped into Ghana to enhance ECG operations but disappeared without a trace, triggering a nationwide uproar. Investigations have revealed procurement irregularities and questionable transactions within the ECG, raising suspicions of complicity among high-ranking officials.

Gbande did not mince words in his call for justice, stressing that those responsible for the scandal must be held accountable.

“The Board Chairman, Afenyo-Markin, now wants to run away from responsibility, and it is in the interest of the country for him to be arrested immediately,” Gbande asserted. “I am calling for the immediate arrest of Afenyo-Markin, Samuel Dubik Mahama, and Matthew Opoku Prempeh because we cannot continue to have these instances of corruption, and it is time for us to take action.”

The scandal has sparked widespread outrage, with many Ghanaians questioning how such a large quantity of valuable equipment could disappear unnoticed. The missing containers are said to have contained materials vital for power distribution and electrification projects across the country.

This development comes amid mounting concerns over the accountability of public officials and the effectiveness of measures to combat corruption in state-owned enterprises. The government has been urged to intensify investigations and ensure that all individuals involved in the scandal face justice.
