Alhaji Seidu Agongo Rebuilds Storm-Ravaged Sawaliga Basic School in 3 Weeks

The morning after the May 22, 2025, rainstorm, Sawaliga Basic School in Talensi District, Upper East Region, lay in shambles — its roof ripped off, classrooms devastated, and hundreds of students left without a place to learn. What once nurtured young dreams had become a dangerous wreck of twisted roofing sheets and broken beams.

But out of tragedy rose hope — and that hope had a name: Alhaji Seidu Agongo.

The Ghanaian businessman and philanthropist was deeply moved when viral social media posts shared by youth leader Solomon Zinekena exposed the disaster. The posts showed final-year students, just weeks from their BECE, sitting under trees and broken blocks trying to study.

“Those were not just pictures,” Agongo said. “Those were my own children — Ghana’s future — loitering in ruins where they should have been learning.”

Without waiting for bureaucracy, Agongo called contractors and mobilised swift action. In just three weeks, the school was transformed. New roofing, fresh paint, and repaired classrooms gave students and teachers a clean, dignified place to continue their education.

Assistant Head Teacher Jonas Mbazoyinbil was overcome with emotion. “We had lost all hope. The children were wandering aimlessly. Today, we have a beautiful, functioning school again.”

During a community commissioning ceremony, Sawaliga elders enskinned Alhaji Agongo as a development chief, bestowing upon him a sheep, a smock, and a citation — heartfelt tokens of gratitude for his selfless act.

Although infrastructural gaps remain — three classes still share a single room — the school now stands as a symbol of what compassion, swift action, and community spirit can achieve.

“Education is the foundation of our nation’s future,” Agongo said. “If we have the means to help, we must act — and act fast.”
