Akwatia MP Convicted for Contempt, Court Issues Arrest Warrant

The High Court in Koforidua has convicted Ernest Yaw Kumi, Member of Parliament for Akwatia, for contempt of court after he defied an interim injunction barring him from being sworn in as a legislator.

Presiding Judge, Justice Senyo Amedahe, also issued a bench warrant for Kumi’s arrest after he failed to appear for sentencing.

The court had previously restrained the MP from taking the oath of office pending the resolution of a legal dispute.

However, Kumi disregarded the order and proceeded with his swearing-in.

Citing clear evidence of wilful defiance, the court ruled that Kumi had undermined its authority. Attempts by the Minority Caucus to justify his absence through an official letter were dismissed by the judge.

With the bench warrant now in effect, authorities are expected to enforce his arrest and ensure compliance with the court’s ruling.
