Akwatia by-election: It Will Be a Surprise if NDC Loses – Mornah

Leader of the People’s National Convention (PNC), Bernard Anbataayela Mornah, has said it would be surprising if the National Democratic Congress (NDC) fails to win the ongoing Akwatia by-election, citing what he described as the overwhelming involvement of state actors in the constituency.

Speaking on JoyNews during a panel discussion on Tuesday, September 2, Mr Mornah alleged that top officials from the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) and chief executives of several state institutions had flooded the constituency in the days leading up to the vote, engaging in activities designed to mobilise support for the NDC.

“I think it will be a surprise that the NDC doesn’t win. This is because everybody is there, and once everybody is there, everybody is spending,” he said.

While acknowledging official denials of vote buying, the PNC leader insisted that evidence on the ground pointed to widespread inducements.

“I have heard that there is no vote buying and what have you, but the AMA boss and all his people are there. They are supporting and tipping people to go out there and vote. That may not be the official party’s stance, but they are spending.”

Mr Mornah claimed that the scale of state-sponsored mobilisation in Akwatia was unprecedented, with public officials allegedly taking on covert campaign roles rather than concentrating on their official duties.

“CSOs of almost all the state institutions are there. They are spending. Will the NPP have the same steam?” he asked, casting doubt on whether the opposition party could match the level of resources being deployed by the NDC.

The by-election in Akwatia has drawn keen national attention, with both major parties—the NDC and the NPP—viewing the outcome as a test of their political strength ahead of the 2028 general election.
