Akufo-Addo Congratulates Germany’s Chancellor-in-Waiting Friedrich Merz on Election Victory
Former Ghanaian President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has extended his warm congratulations to Friedrich Merz, Germany’s newly elected leader and Chancellor-in-waiting, following his victory in the elections held on Sunday, February 23, 2025.
In a statement shared on X (formerly Twitter), Akufo-Addo expressed his delight at the outcome of the election, emphasising the renewed confidence the German people have placed in the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) under Merz’s leadership.
“I am particularly glad that the German people have, by this election, renewed their confidence in the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) under the new leadership of Mr. Merz,” he stated.

Akufo-Addo also highlighted the strong ties between Ghana’s ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the CDU, both of which are members of the International Democratic Union (IDU), a global alliance of centre-right political parties.
“The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has for many years enjoyed fraternal and collaborative relations with the CDU under the banner of the International Democratic Union (IDU). Long may it thrive!” Akufo-Addo remarked.
He concluded by extending his best wishes to Merz, expressing optimism for Germany’s continued prosperity under his leadership.
Merz’s victory marks a significant moment in Germany’s political landscape, ushering in a new era of governance under the CDU. His administration is expected to focus on economic reforms, strengthening the European Union, and reinforcing Germany’s role on the global stage.
