Akua Afriyie Rejects EC’s Rerun Decision in Ablekuma North

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidate for Ablekuma North, Akua Afriyie, has strongly rejected the Electoral Commission’s (EC) decision to rerun elections in 19 polling stations, describing the move as unjustified, inconsistent, and politically motivated.

Speaking in an interview on Channel One Newsroom, the 2024 candidate expressed her disapproval of the EC’s decision, claiming the collation process had already reached completion in all but three polling stations before the sudden announcement of a rerun.

“We are not going to accept this decision. My reason is very simple. We have gone through all the collation, and we are at three polling stations for us to complete the collation and declaration — so what changed?” she questioned.

Akua Afriyie further accused the EC of contradicting its own official position. She noted that the commission had previously testified under oath in Parliament that only three polling stations remained unresolved and had maintained that position consistently until now.

“We had the EC coming to Parliament, swearing under oath that we have only three polling stations left. That’s what it has always been,” she emphasised.

Afriyie also alleged that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) was manipulating the situation to seize the seat, which has traditionally been a stronghold for the NPP. She questioned the timing and rationale behind the EC’s reversal, suggesting it was driven by political pressure.

“If the NDC is bent on taking the seat and goes to the extent of requesting a rerun, and the EC that had always insisted there were only three polling stations left now says it agrees with the NDC—then where are we?” she said.
“We are not agreeing to this.”

Background and Rising Tensions

The EC announced on Wednesday, July 2, that it would conduct a rerun in 19 polling stations on Friday, July 11, 2025, due to issues with unverified pink sheets. The decision followed months of deadlock between the NDC and NPP over destroyed election documents during the December 2024 parliamentary collation.

The NPP insists the EC can proceed with the declaration using results already accepted and that only three polling stations are still pending. However, the EC maintains that 19 polling station results—though approved by party agents—lacked verification by presiding officers, rendering them invalid under electoral standards.

The rerun has since sparked growing political tensions, with the NPP planning a press conference and key stakeholders calling for clarity, transparency, and restraint ahead of what could be a fiercely contested by-election.

The outcome in Ablekuma North is crucial, as it will determine the final composition of Ghana’s 276-member Parliament.
