Ahiagbah Defends Ken Ofori-Atta, Denies Claims of Flight Risk

The Director of Communications for the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Richard Ahiagbah, has rejected claims that former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta is attempting to flee the country to escape corruption investigations.

Ahiagbah insisted that Ofori-Atta is not a flight risk and is willing to cooperate fully with any probe regarding allegations against him.

His statement comes in response to the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), which on Wednesday, February 12, 2025, declared Ofori-Atta a fugitive.

The OSP has accused the former minister of causing financial loss to the state in connection with transactions involving the controversial National Cathedral project and the Ghana Revenue Authority’s (GRA) deal with Strategic Mobilisation Ghana Ltd. (SML). Ofori-Atta allegedly approved ¢142.7 million for the National Cathedral, a project initiated under former President Akufo-Addo, which has since stalled amid allegations of mismanagement.

Speaking on JoyNews’ The Pulse, Ahiagbah argued that the Special Prosecutor’s claim suggests Ofori-Atta is guilty before any court proceedings.

“He has not been convicted of any crime. He is only a suspect, and suspects assist in investigations. I don’t believe Ken Ofori-Atta would evade his responsibilities,” Ahiagbah stated.

He also addressed Ofori-Atta’s well-documented health challenges, noting that even during his tenure as finance minister, he worked tirelessly despite his condition.

“If he now needs medical attention, we should give him the space rather than engage in political grandstanding,” Ahiagbah said.

The OSP, however, maintains that Ofori-Atta must return to the country to face legal proceedings, setting the stage for a contentious legal battle.
