Ablekuma North Rerun: NPP Campaigns Despite Initial Boycott

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has officially begun its campaign in the Ablekuma North Constituency ahead of the parliamentary rerun scheduled for Friday, July 11, 2025, Citi News has confirmed.

The rerun, which affects 19 polling stations, was ordered by the Electoral Commission (EC) to resolve disputes surrounding the results of the December 2024 parliamentary election. The Commission cited questions over result authenticity in the affected areas.

The NPP’s decision to campaign marks a significant reversal from its earlier boycott stance. The party had previously declared its intention not to participate in the rerun, insisting that its candidate, Nana Akua Afriyie, won the December contest by a margin of 414 votes.

This shift in strategy follows the Accra High Court’s dismissal of a suit filed by Nana Akua Afriyie seeking to block the rerun. With legal efforts exhausted, the party has now embraced the campaign trail, signalling a renewed push to retain the seat.

Speaking at a press conference on July 8, NPP General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong reaffirmed the party’s stance:

“For us in the New Patriotic Party (NPP), we are resolute, and we know that our candidate, Nana Akua Afriyie, won the elections with a margin of 414 votes. This is based on facts and figures.”

He stressed that the party’s National Executive Committee remains committed to defending what it sees as its rightful electoral mandate, stating, “We are not going to be intimidated.”

Reports from Citi FM’s Fauzu Masawudu indicate that hundreds of party supporters have hit the ground, canvassing voters ahead of the high-stakes rerun. Some campaigners cited the EC’s decision to retain Nana Akua Afriyie’s image on the ballot paper as a key motivator for their renewed participation.

The Ablekuma North rerun is expected to be closely contested, with political tension still simmering after months of legal battles and public debate. The outcome could influence the balance of power in Parliament and serve as a litmus test for party strength ahead of future elections.
