A festive celebration at Agona Asafo in the Agona East District of Ghana’s Central Region turned tragic when a truck loaded with coconuts ploughed into a jubilant crowd, leaving 18 people injured, five of them in critical condition.
The incident occurred on Sunday, August 31, 2025, during the community’s annual football gala, an event that traditionally marks the opening of the Kwabo Festival.
According to Ishmael Odoom, Assemblyman for the Agona Asafo Electoral Area, the crash happened just after the gala finals, when the winning team and their supporters mounted a float to celebrate their victory.

“The Kia, heavily loaded with coconuts, failed to stop despite seeing the large crowd and ran into the people celebrating on the street,” Odoom recounted.
Witnesses described scenes of chaos and panic as revellers scattered to avoid the oncoming vehicle, while others were trapped beneath it.
All 18 victims were rushed to the Agona Swedru Government Hospital, where emergency teams worked through the night to stabilise the injured. Hospital officials confirmed that five of the victims are in critical condition, while the remaining 13 are receiving treatment for varying degrees of injury, including fractures, head wounds, and lacerations.
Relatives of the injured have since trooped to the hospital in distress, with many demanding answers on how such a heavily loaded truck was allowed into the path of a public procession.
The police have opened an investigation into the incident, focusing on whether mechanical failure, overloading, or driver negligence was responsible for the tragedy. Authorities are also considering tightening safety protocols for festivals and public gatherings to prevent similar disasters in the future.
The Kwabo Festival, which usually draws large crowds from across the Agona East District with football, cultural displays, and street processions, has now been overshadowed by grief and shock.
