The First Vice Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Chairman Danquah Smith Buttey, has attributed the party’s defeat in the 2024 general elections to what he describes as weak leadership on the part of the party’s executives.
Speaking in an exclusive interview on Hot FM’s Morning Drive hosted by Don Kwabena Prah, Chairman Buttey candidly admitted that the executive leadership failed to take decisive actions when it mattered most, particularly in addressing misconduct within the party.
“We should have taken firm decisions on some of the wrongs that were happening within the party. But because we were weak, we couldn’t act, and that contributed to our loss,” he stated.

According to him, the NPP’s constitution mandates the leadership to steer the party’s affairs and ensure discipline, but the executives fell short of that responsibility.
“We were voted into leadership to spearhead the party’s activities. The constitution says the leader of the party controls the party, and that leader is the chairman. Unfortunately, we sat aloof and allowed the party to lose power. Leadership must be blamed, and we must accept that blame,” he added.
Chairman Buttey emphasized that the defeat was not due to external factors but rather internal failures. “We cannot blame anybody for the misfortune of the party because we didn’t play our role well, and that is because we were weak as leaders,” he reiterated.
He concluded by asserting that the NPP could have retained power in the 2024 elections if the executives had been more assertive in addressing the issues that plagued the party.
