“120 Days of Disappointment and Regret” – Afenyo-Markin Blasts NDC Government

Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has described the first 120 days of President John Dramani Mahama’s administration as “120 days of disappointment and regret”, accusing the government of political discrimination, broken promises, and poor governance.

Speaking on Eyewitness News on Citi FM on Tuesday, May 6, the lawmaker condemned the government for allegedly creating a divided society. “The NDC in 120 days has created two Ghanas: a Ghana for them and their party and a Ghana for the others they consider enemies,” he said.

Afenyo-Markin cited the termination of employment for public servants hired after the December 7, 2024 elections as evidence of political victimisation.

According to him, the dismissals extended beyond core government offices to include teachers and nurses who had already been posted.

“The original letter from the Chief of Staff said that those employed in the public and civil service after the December 7 elections — if there were irregularities — should have their employment terminated,” he said. “But what did we even see? There was a mass dismissal.”

He also criticised the lack of progress on the government’s flagship 24-hour economy promise, arguing that there is no clear policy direction or support structure to make the shift-based employment model work.

“They made us believe they would implement a ‘one-three-three’ model — one job, three shifts — by creating an enabling environment for the private sector through incentives. What we see today is a complete lack of policy direction,” he lamented.

Afenyo-Markin concluded that the NDC’s early governance had been marked by broken promises, rising unemployment, and a deepening sense of exclusion among non-party supporters.
