10 Heads of State to Attend Mahama’s Inauguration on January 7, 2025

Mr. Felix Kwakye Ofosu, spokesperson for the John Dramani Mahama Transition Team, has confirmed that ten heads of state will attend the swearing-in ceremony of President-elect John Dramani Mahama on Tuesday, January 7, 2025, at the Black Star Square in Accra.

In a press conference held earlier today, Mr. Ofosu revealed that the event would also see the participation of two vice presidents, one speaker of parliament, two former presidents, and distinguished representatives from key international organisations, including the Commonwealth and the African Development Bank.

“The inauguration will be a major international event, and we are excited to host leaders and dignitaries from around the world,” Mr. Ofosu remarked.

The swearing-in ceremony will take place in the heart of Accra, with a parliamentary session scheduled as part of the proceedings. As a result, Parliament’s sitting will be temporarily relocated to the venue. To ensure security and smooth organisation, access to the parliamentary session will be strictly controlled, with only invited guests allowed entry.

“We are committed to ensuring a secure and well-organised event, showcasing Ghana’s unwavering commitment to democratic processes and peaceful transitions of power,” Mr. Ofosu stated.

He reminded the public and guests that no one would be allowed to enter the ceremony area without an invitation card. “Members of the public are advised that only those with official invitations will be granted access,” he emphasised.

The event is expected to begin promptly at 11:00 hours, following the seating of guests at 08:30 hours. Members of Parliament, along with other invited guests, will be escorted to their designated areas. The Speaker of Parliament is expected to accompany the President-Elect and Vice President-Elect to the chamber for the official proceedings.

In preparation for the event, several key roads in Accra will be temporarily closed to traffic, including the 28th February Road (from CEPS Headquarters to Castle Road Junction), Castle Road (from AU Circle to Osu Cemetery Traffic Light), and Starlet 91 Road. These roads will be reopened once the event concludes.

Traffic from La, Labone, and Osu heading toward the Central Business District will be redirected to the Salem Avenue Traffic Light, connecting with Oxford Street.

Additionally, traffic from John Evans Atta Mills High Street will be diverted around Black Star Square.

In anticipation of high attendance, several car parks have been designated for event-goers. These include parking areas behind the Independence Arch, at the forecourt of the State House, and at various key locations such as the Access Bank Car Park, the Osu Cemetery Car Park, and the Ministries Areas. The public is urged to avoid parking in unauthorised areas, as strict measures will be enforced to prevent traffic disruptions.

“We appreciate the public’s cooperation in ensuring that this significant event proceeds smoothly,” Mr. Ofosu concluded.

The inauguration promises to be a monumental event, marking the beginning of John Dramani Mahama’s second term as President of Ghana.
