VIDEO: 'There Is No Bawumia Party in NPP' – Chairman Buttey Fires Back at Endorsement Claims
The Acting National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Danquah Smith-Buttey, has dismissed claims that the party's flagbearer, Mahamudu Bawumia, is endorsing preferred candidates in the party's upcoming constituency, regional and national executive elections.
His comments follow reports circulating on social media alleging that some aspiring executives are being prevented from picking nomination forms because they are perceived not to belong to Dr Bawumia's camp.
Speaking to PureTVOnline, Chairman Smith-Buttey described the allegations as false and urged party members to disregard what he called misleading claims intended to create divisions within the NPP.
According to him, while individuals may invoke the flagbearer's name during their campaigns to gain support from delegates, such claims should not be interpreted as official endorsements.
"I am a party chairman, and someone can even use my name during their campaign, claiming I support their bid. Does that automatically make it true? No," he said.
Mr Smith-Buttey stressed that victory in the party's internal elections would depend on the strength of candidates' campaigns and their ability to convince delegates, rather than perceived backing from influential party figures.
"Anyone contesting for a position in the party should intensify their campaign because delegates will vote based on your message and the effort you put into your campaign," he stated.
He further argued that history has shown that attempts by any flagbearer to openly back candidates in internal elections often prove counterproductive.
"Any flagbearer who goes all out to favour particular candidates in party elections will rather cause those candidates to lose because delegates will vote against them," he said.
The acting national chairman also rejected suggestions that the party had become divided into factions following the presidential primaries.
"There is no Bawumia party, no Kennedy Agyapong party and no Kwabena Agyapong party within the NPP. We are one party, and those claims of division are false," he emphasised.
He noted that all party members, regardless of which presidential aspirant they supported during the flagbearer contest, have every right to seek executive positions within the party.
"There are no factions after the election of the flagbearer. Those who supported different candidates are still members of the NPP and are equally entitled to contest internal elections," he added.
Chairman Smith-Buttey reiterated that Dr Bawumia has neither selected nor endorsed any preferred candidates for the upcoming internal elections and urged party members to reject what he described as unfounded rumours seeking to undermine party unity.
He called on aspirants to focus on engaging delegates and promoting their vision for the party rather than relying on claims of endorsement by senior party leaders.
