‘Verification Makes Speed Responsible’ – Shamima Muslim
Deputy Presidential Spokesperson Shamima Muslim has urged newsrooms to resist the pressure to publish information before it has been properly verified.
She said the competition for clicks and audience attention must not undermine the accuracy and credibility of journalism.
Speaking at the Conference on AI, Cloud and Future Broadcasting, Shamima Muslim said newsrooms operating under pressure could be tempted to publish immediately and correct mistakes later.
“Verification is not an obstacle to speed. It is what makes speed responsible,” she said.
Her comments come amid growing concerns over misinformation and manipulated content across digital platforms.
Madam Shamima said artificial intelligence could imitate presenters’ voices while manipulated videos could make fabricated events appear genuine.
She said the challenge was particularly significant for traditional media organisations because audiences had historically relied on established broadcasters as sources of credible information.
However, she noted that some traditional media platforms had also found themselves publishing unverified material.
She urged broadcasters to protect public trust through accuracy, consistency, fairness, transparency and accountability.
She also referenced the Reuters Institute’s 2026 Digital News Report, which she said recorded continuing concerns about trust in news and false or misleading information across the markets studied.
